Greater Boston Childcare Collective

About Us.

Our vision

Our mission

Through a racial justice lens, GBCC has developed a focus on supporting groups working on racial justice, immigrant justice, community health, and prison abolition. We work with our partners to determine whether the childcare will be paid or unpaid by understanding the makeup of their leadership, their mission or focus and if possible, their funding structure. When the partner’s work is focused on racial justice and being lead by people of color, or anyone at the forefront of their struggles, GBCC provides care for free, unless the partner informs us they would like to pay for childcare. When the partner’s work lies outside our mission and the above criteria (ex: Our Revolution Somerville and SURJ), we ask them to pay for childcare (typically $11-15 per hour).

Accountability

As a planning team we continuously think about the balance between our goal to do work in solidarity while also wanting to avoid devaluing the important labor that is childcare. We understand that as white people, we need to provide culturally competent care and consistently check how we hold privilege as well as reflect on our socialized biases. In effort to do the work responsibly, we have paid women of color, some parents, some teachers, to give us feedback on our mission statement and guidelines.

We prioritize groups and organizations that are grassroots, local and led by people of color. We still have much to do to ensure we are acting with accountability and this comes with the acknowledgement that it is a process and will continue to be an important part of our work. Childcare is a real and pressing need in movement spaces, and we will work to keep moving forward responsibly.

Long story short – accountability is a process, we are working on it! We welcome suggestions!
